Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie Review: My Thoughts as a Non-Gamer

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a movie that tells a classic adventure story of a mismatched group of ruffians on a quest to save the world. It is hilarious, random, and full of magic, much like I would imagine the game itself is. I think this is the perfect movie to walk into with no expectations, because it will surely win you over with its story and characters. You will never feel too bored because the setting is constantly changing and you are getting thrown into new and wild situations at any given moment.

You don’t really need to know anything about Dungeons & Dragons, the game, in order to enjoy this movie about Dungeons & Dragons. All I know about the game is that it relies heavily on imagination and the luck of the dice. It is also a game that requires a lot of time - groups of friends need to gather once a week for many weeks in order to finish a campaign. I love that the people who play are so passionate and invested in the game. And as someone who only has a limited understanding of the game, I enjoyed this movie a lot! Actual fans of the game might have different expectations for it haha.

Chris Pine plays the main character, Edgin. He is the classic, charismatic leader that doesn’t bring anything particularly skillful to the table other than his determination, humor, and charming good looks. Maybe it’s just because he’s Chris Pine, but him playing Edgin reminds me of when he played the Prince in Into the Woods. It’s that same chaotic, humorous energy, but in a different scenario. He even sings in both films LOL! But all this to say that Pine does a really good job in this lead role. I loved the effortless humor and charisma that he brings to the story. He’s definitely a standout character for me in this film.

I really enjoyed all of the characters in this film and I think everyone did a fantastic job in their role. Regé-Jean Page was used a lot in the marketing of this film, but he turned out to be less of a main character than I thought he would be. Clearly, they really needed to bring in the swarms of Bridgerton fans. I also felt like it was difficult to understand what he was saying because of his strong British accent and the soft-spoken nature of his character.

At its heart, this movie is a comedy and a great opportunity to let loose and laugh. It reminds me of stories like Ella Enchanted and The Princess Bride, which also leads me to believe that it will have a long shelf life. I think this movie is definitely re-watchable as one of those feel-good stories that will make you crack a smile whenever you’re feeling low. Even if the visual effects are not groundbreaking or the story isn’t full of loopholes, the point is that this movie is a crowd-pleaser and definitely worth a watch.
